Living Room Dialogue Series
Acknowledged Issue:
On behalf of the Diversity Advisory Group of Pilgrim Place, a senior living community in Claremont, CA:
The residents of Pilgrim Place are seeking more ethnic and racial diversity in its community. The residents, predominately White, are also aware that though a majority of residents are open to such diversity, it is apparent that ongoing education, openness and personal experience with people of color is necessary for learning about change in the communal life of Pilgrim Place.
Designed Scope of Work:
In collaboration with Natalie Shiras, lead member of Diversity Advisory Group, we co-developed the concept and curriculum of monthly workshops allowing for a safe space for participants to share stories regarding personal experiences with racism and to promote progressive dialogue to support learning and growth.
Strategic partnerships were created with a local NAACP chapter and other organizations to support our intentional purpose to promote community inclusion and empathy building.
The Living Room Dialogue workshops are rooted in a research-based curriculum that is designed to educate participants through guided story sharing. A combination of small and large groups are used to offer a differentiated learning impact to explore diversity, personal identity, culture, race, and the conflict around diversity, systemic racism and racial barriers, with opportunities to develop skills for relating among diverse groups of people.
